Outlets are something most homeowners do not think about until one stops working or there are not enough of them. Whether you need a new outlet added, an old one repaired, or an upgrade to GFCI or USB outlets, Kelley Electric handles residential outlet installation and repair throughout Allentown and the Lehigh Valley area.

Outlet Installation

Adding outlets to your home is one of the more straightforward electrical upgrades you can make, and it makes a real difference in day-to-day convenience. Running extension cords across a room or constantly swapping plugs at a single outlet is not just annoying, it can also put unnecessary strain on your electrical system. Our electricians can add outlets wherever you need them and make sure everything is wired correctly and up to current code.

Common outlet installation requests we handle for Allentown and Lehigh Valley homeowners include:

  • Standard duplex outlet installation
  • GFCI outlet installation in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas
  • USB and USB-C outlet upgrades for convenient device charging
  • Dedicated appliance outlets for dryers, refrigerators, and other high-draw appliances
  • Outdoor outlet installation
  • Floor outlet installation

Outlet Upgrades

Older homes throughout the Lehigh Valley area often have outlets that are overdue for an upgrade. Two-prong ungrounded outlets, outlets without GFCI protection in wet areas, and outlets that have simply worn out over the years are all worth addressing. Upgrading them improves both safety and functionality, and in many cases it is required to meet current electrical code.

If you are not sure whether your outlets are up to current standards, we are happy to take a look and give you a straight answer on what needs attention and what can wait.

Outlet Repair

An outlet that sparks, feels warm, makes noise, or has simply stopped working needs to be looked at by a licensed electrician. These are not just inconveniences. They can be signs of a loose connection, a wiring problem, or a failing outlet that poses a real safety risk if left alone.

Common outlet issues we diagnose and repair include:

  • Dead outlets with no power
  • Outlets that spark when you plug something in
  • Outlets that feel warm or hot to the touch
  • GFCI outlets that will not reset
  • Loose outlets that do not hold plugs securely
  • Outlets with scorch marks or burning smells

GFCI outlets are required by code in any area where water and electricity could come into contact, including kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, and outdoor spaces. If your home has standard outlets in any of these areas, they should be upgraded. Older Lehigh Valley homes are especially likely to be missing GFCI protection in one or more of these spots.

Yes. Adding an outlet in a new location involves running wire from your electrical panel or an existing circuit to the new outlet location. Depending on what you're plugging in, we may recommend adding a dedicated circuit rather than tapping into an existing one. We'll walk you through the options before any work starts.

A dedicated outlet serves a single appliance or device and isn't shared with anything else on that circuit. Large appliances like dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and window AC units typically require their own dedicated circuit. If you're tripping breakers regularly or an appliance isn't performing the way it should, a dedicated circuit is often the fix.

If it's in a kitchen, bathroom, or garage, check whether a nearby GFCI outlet has tripped since those can cut power to other outlets on the same circuit. If that's not it, the outlet itself may have failed or there could be a loose connection in the wiring. Either way, an electrician can track it down quickly.

A brief, tiny spark when plugging something in can be normal as the circuit connects. But if the spark is large, loud, or happens repeatedly, that's a sign of a problem. Worn contacts, a loose wire, or a failing outlet can all cause excessive sparking and should be repaired before the outlet is used again.

You can buy the parts, but whether it's safe depends on your wiring. Simply swapping the outlet without proper grounding doesn't actually make it safer, it just looks like it does. A licensed electrician can assess whether your wiring supports a grounded three-prong outlet or whether a GFCI outlet is the right solution for your situation.

A single outlet swap or repair is typically done in under an hour. Adding new outlets in a room or running a new dedicated circuit takes longer depending on the location and how the wiring needs to be routed. We'll give you a clear time estimate once we've had a chance to assess the job.
